Protecting Your Peace Without Losing Your Professionalism: Navigating Emotional Labor in the Workplace

Presented by: Donovan Donnell, ACC

Professionalism often comes with unspoken expectations --- managing emotions, absorbing stress, minimizing discomfort, and carrying invisible burdens that can take a toll over time. This session explores the concept of emotional labor in the workplace and its impact on wellbeing, performance, and authenticity. With particular attention to the experiences of Black professionals and others from historically marginalized groups, participants will examine how workplace norms can create pressure to self-monitor, code-switch, or suppress emotions in order to be perceived as professional. The session will provide practical strategies for setting boundaries, preserving energy, and navigating workplace dynamics without sacrificing personal wellbeing or professional effectiveness.
